Tallow & Your Skin
Will it work for me?
What is tallow, and why is it so good for skin?
Tallow is rendered animal fat, and its composition closely resembles the natural oils in human skin. It carries fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids your skin recognizes and puts to work, which is why it absorbs instead of sitting on the surface.
Can I use tallow skincare if I have oily or acne-prone skin?
Yes. Tallow is highly compatible with the skin and absorbs easily without feeling heavy. Many customers find it helps bring balance to their skin rather than contributing to excess oil.
Will it clog my pores?
Tallow is non-comedogenic for most skin types and closely resembles the natural oils found in healthy skin. When used in appropriate amounts, it typically absorbs well and does not sit on the surface.
Does it smell like beef?
No. Properly rendered tallow has a clean, neutral scent, and rendering it properly is most of what we do all week.
How should I use tallow skincare in my routine?
A small amount is typically sufficient. It can be used as a daily moisturizer, morning or evening, depending on your skin's needs. Because it is concentrated, a little goes a long way. New to tallow? Start with the first-time tallow user's guide.
Why is my tallow firmer in winter and softer in summer?
Tallow naturally responds to temperature: firmer in cooler months, softer in warmer ones. Nothing is wrong, and the quality is unchanged. It's what skincare does when it isn't stabilized with synthetics.
Are your products gentle enough for sensitive skin?
For most people, yes, and often better tolerated than plant-based alternatives, since there is no botanical allergen and very little in the jar to react to. Dry, irritated, and compromised skin tends to do best with fewer ingredients, chosen carefully. As with anything new, we recommend a patch test first.
Products & Ingredients
What's in the jar.
What makes your products different from other skincare brands?
Our products begin at the agricultural level. We raise and source many of our ingredients directly, allowing for a level of control, traceability, and integrity that is uncommon in skincare.
What makes estate-raised tallow different?
Most tallow skincare is made with commodity tallow, bought from a supplier and shipped in. Ours comes from cattle raised on our own pastures and rendered here on the farm, often the same week your jar is made. We know what the animals ate and how they were cared for, which is not something anyone can know about tallow that arrives in a drum.
Are your products truly natural?
We intentionally avoid synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, harsh preservatives, and unnecessary fillers. Every ingredient earns its place, and the full list is printed on every product.
Where do your ingredients come from? Do you source locally?
Many of our core ingredients, including tallow and raw goat milk, are produced on our farm. What we can't raise ourselves comes from trusted agricultural partners, local whenever possible, because supporting our farming community matters to us.
What type of Vitamin E do you use?
We use natural, non-GMO sunflower-derived Vitamin E (tocopherol) rather than the synthetic form. It works as an antioxidant for the skin and helps keep the oils in our formulations stable, which is part of how we avoid synthetic preservatives.
Do your products contain essential oils?
Most of our formulations do not rely on essential oils. We prioritize ingredient integrity and often use alternative methods, such as CO2 extracts or whole ingredients, to maintain a more balanced and skin-compatible formulation.
What is the difference between your lip products?
The Lip Butter is built for deep hydration and protection. The Nature's Botox lip formula adds ingredients chosen to support smoother, fuller-looking lips. Daily care versus a little extra.
How long does each product last?
Stored in a cool place away from direct sun, our tallow products keep for 12 months from the batch date printed on the lid. Softening in warm temperatures is natural and doesn't compromise quality.
Why are products sometimes sold out?
Because we render weekly, in small batch, on a working farm, not in a factory. When a product sells through, we wait until the next batch is ready rather than rush a substitute. Join The House List to know when a batch returns.
Goat Milk & Cleansing Bars
From the dairy.
What makes your goat milk special?
Our milk comes from our herd of ADGA-registered Nigerian Dwarf goats, raised on the farm and milked daily. The breed is known for naturally higher butterfat, and that richness, along with vitamins, minerals, and natural lactic acid, is what makes the cleansing bars feel the way they do.
Does goat milk soap smell strong?
No. Our milk has a naturally mild, slightly sweet aroma. There is nothing barnyard about it.
Can your cleansing bars be used on the face?
Yes. Our bars are formulated to be gentle and nourishing enough for both face and body, and they pair well as the first step before a tallow cream.
How long does a bar last?
Most bars last four to six weeks, depending on how often you use them. Letting the bar drain and dry between uses stretches its life.
Are your soaps made the traditional way?
Yes. We use small-batch cold process methods with intentional superfatting, the way soap was made before it became an industrial product.
Bee Venom
From the apiary.
What are the benefits of bee venom?
Bee venom creates a gentle micro-stimulus in the skin, which encourages your skin's own collagen and elastin renewal. With consistent use, that tends to show up as firmer-looking skin and softened fine lines, without needles and without synthetics.
Is your bee venom ethically sourced?
Yes. The venom is gathered using a method that lets bees deposit trace amounts on a glass surface without stinging and without harm to the bee or the hive. The colony carries on afterward as usual. It is the same standard we hold for everything else on this farm: if it costs the animal, we don't do it.
Can I use bee venom products if I have a bee allergy?
No. Do not use our bee venom products if you have a known allergy to bee stings or bee-derived ingredients, or any history of anaphylaxis. If you are unsure whether you are allergic, speak with your physician before using them. Our full disclosure is below.
Why does bee venom feel warm and tingly?
That warmth is the micro-stimulus at work, a mild increase in circulation right at the surface of the skin. It usually settles within a few minutes, and most people notice it less as their skin becomes accustomed to the product. If the sensation turns into real discomfort, redness, or swelling, stop using it.
What are spongilla spicules, and why are they in some of your bee venom products?
Spongilla spicules come from freshwater sponge. Under magnification they are fine natural needles, and on the skin they provide a gentle micro-exfoliation while helping the rest of the formula reach past the surface. They are the reason certain products tingle more noticeably than others.
Can I use bee venom products while pregnant or nursing?
Speak with your physician first. We take the same position on any active ingredient during pregnancy or nursing: the person who knows your history should be the one to make that call.
Bee Venom Safety
Before using our bee venom products, please read.
Our bee venom formulations contain bee venom (0.5%) and bee-derived ingredients. Do not use them if you are allergic to bee stings or bee products. We recommend a 24-hour patch test before first use.
Ordering, Shipping & Returns
Getting it to you.
How long does order processing take?
Orders are typically processed within two to three business days. Remember, the same hands that render the tallow pack the boxes.
Do you ship your products, and how do you handle heat?
Yes, we ship nationwide. Because our products are made with natural fats, we take care in packaging and may adjust shipping methods during warmer months to help maintain product integrity.
Will my products melt during shipping?
In summer heat, they can soften or melt in transit. If that happens, nothing is wrong with the product. Set the jar somewhere cool and let it firm back up. The surface may look different than it did when it left the farm, but the formulation is unchanged. We adjust our packaging and shipping methods during the warmer months to keep it to a minimum.
When does free shipping apply?
Shipping is complimentary on all orders of $150 or more.
Do you accept returns?
We don't accept returns or exchanges. If your order arrives damaged or contains the wrong item, email hello@southernoaksskincare.com within 7 days of delivery with your order number and clear photos of the item and packaging, and we'll arrange a replacement or refund.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Email us within 12 hours of placing your order and we'll do our best to change or cancel it, as long as it hasn't shipped. Once an order ships, it can't be changed or canceled.
Can I buy in person?
Yes. We're at Lowcountry and Columbia markets most weeks of the year, and our Charleston flagship at 569 King Street, Suite 101, opens November 7, 2026, Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. See the Where To Find Us page for days and locations.
